Chapter 2 is about understanding the life cycle of your enterprise IPT system and harnessing that understanding to increase the success of your implementation as well as your financial rewards-be those rewards direct tactical benefits such as cost savings or indirect, and often elusive, strategic benefits. This chapter is also about squeezing as much use as you possibly can from your existing telephony systems-a move that can make a lot of business sense regardless of your natural desire to discard the old and to start using the shiny new thing.

Unmanaged devices are computers, personal digital assistants, cell phones, and other devices that can access an organization's network but are not necessarily controlled by that organization. The problem with introducing unmanaged devices is the damage that can be done with them, either intentionally or not. Average users working with their devices in average ways are vulnerable to information loss. As Chapter 5 explores, traditional security mechanisms that depend on being able to manage all devices connected to an organization's IT infrastructure are no longer sufficient.
Chapter 5: Protecting Information Use on Unmanaged Devices, written by Dan Sullivan, is available at: http://nexus.realtimepublishers.com/links/newsletter/dgitp.asp

Business Internet use is subject to a dynamic environment in which both external and internal threats adapt to preventive measures as well as emerging opportunities. For example, computer viruses were once transmitted via diskettes shared among PCs. Later, they leveraged the communications capabilities of the Internet. Since then, they have incorporated multiple techniques to avoid detection. As viruses became more sophisticated, so did the countermeasures for detecting and stopping them. Chapter 2 will examine the evolving nature of threats and countermeasures.
