Planning for Exchange storage can be a bit tricky in a few regards. The first is planning for storage capacity. The second is that even when the amount of storage that is required for email is calculated accurately, there is actually more overhead associated with Exchange Server data once you consider factors such as deleted information retention, full text index files, database white space, and transaction logs. Chapter 2 will review not only the common mistakes that are made when calculating the amount of storage required to support a group of users but also the mistakes made when calculating the I/O capacity required to support that group of users.

Recent monitoring of botnet activity indicates a sudden and still unexplained surge. According to a recent posting at ShadowServer.org, the number of identified botnets quadrupled in 3 weeks. This activity cannot be explained by the rapid growth of one or two botnets or the introduction of new botnets. The wide distribution of growth may be indicative of a newly discovered vulnerability, but no conclusive results can be drawn from the available data. So what can be done? This article will look at some ready-to-deploy defensive measures as well as potentially useful techniques for combating botnets

Ever felt the pain of trying to move a server instance from one hardware platform to another? How about from one hardware platform to a virtual one? Those are fairly easy these days. But, what about from a virtual platform to a physical one? Now, that's hard! In this podcast Greg talks with Stephen Lawton of Acronis about just that very pain. Acronis has a few nifty products, like their "Universal Restore" that makes the movement of server instances much easier.

Chapter 7 takes a look at an approach that has been used for many years in the legacy telecommunications industry called FCAPS. The name is an acronym for fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security management. We look at FCAPS because it has been tightly coupled with managing large voice and data networks for many years. Later, the chapter will touch briefly on the IT Information Library and the ITIL framework. Finally, the chapter will delve into availability management, network optimization, and capacity planning issues, exploring these areas using the FCAPS model as a base for methodical techniques in delivering integrated services.
