The real productivity killer in most networks is a performance level that doesn't meet the needs of users. When network performance is consistently below acceptable levels, business cannot operate at full efficiency, workers can't accomplish tasks on time, and the regular movement of business suffers. To exacerbate this situation, smoking out performance issues on a network is virtually impossible without the proper toolset. If you've ever gotten the dreaded "the network is slow" phone call, you know how difficult it can be to track down the problem. Chapter 2 will discuss the tools that can prepare you for when that call comes, enabling you to respond with "I'm on it. I know what the problem is."

A VPN comes very close to realizing the old puzzler about how to have one's cake and eat it too. That's because proper use of VPN technology permits public networks-most notably, the Internet-to serve admirably and securely for ferrying private, encrypted communications between senders and receivers. In fact, the more the VPN software can direct traffic through its transports, the more secure ordinary network communications become. As Chapter 4 explores, the connection medium used to distribute information is a major determining factor when choosing a VPN solution. Part of this choice is platform-specific and another part is protocol-specific.

The information systems that run businesses, governments, and organizations long ago reached levels of complexity that could not be managed by way of an ad hoc approach. Formalized processes and procedures, aligned with organizational objectives, are the foundation upon which successful IT operations are built.
Chapter 11 examines the benefits of mature systems management processes by examining two related questions:
How can a mature systems management model help control IT costs?
What are the costs of not controlling IT operations?

Over the past few years, there have been a slew of security certifications that have sprung up professing to validate that the security product you are buying has been independently vetted to validate that it is trustworthy and will not create more vulnerabilities than it closes if you implement it within your enterprise.

Unified threat management (UTM) is a consolidation of multiple security services into a single device. UTM is a natural evolution of products from firewall, intrusion prevention system (IPS),and content filter solution vendors. From the vendor perspective, the move to UTM products
allows them to package and support a more comprehensive security offering that provides a key advantage to customers—easier management. From a security manager’s perspective, UTM products consolidate essential security measures, which typically include a consolidated management function.
