Chapter 6 begins by examining the basic operations of mass emailing and discussing how s*pammers exploit weaknesses in email protocols. Next, it addresses the economics of s*pam and the attempts to control s*pam through legislation. Although helpful, legislation has not stopped s*pam and likely will not. Technology is therefore crucial to managing s*pam. The chapter includes a review of s*pam management techniques and concludes with some guidelines for evaluating anti-s*pam systems.
