The purpose of this Tips and Tricks Guide is to answer common questions about secure content appliances and their role in enterprise security. The guide is divided into four volumes, each focusing on a different topic. The guide concludes with Volume 4 and particular emphasis on spyware, s*pam, phishing attacks, and access controls on Internet content.

Chapter 4 takes a look at some prescriptive guidance and best practices. That is, ways to prevent problems from becoming disasters. A little preventative maintenance forethought can mean the difference between a bad day gone good and a bad day gone really, really bad. Steps you can take to avoid disaster include planning by having redundancy built-in to your network, keeping an ongoing backup of your data, backing up your AD support structure, and knowing which backup type to use.

An effective information security program consists of many layers. Such layering establishes a more reliable security posture; if a failure or breach occurs in one layer, it will not compromise the other concentric layers. Implementing security within these multi-dimensional layers will provide a comprehensive enterprise information assurance framework within which organizations can then apply the appropriate tools and establish appropriate corresponding management activities. As Chapter 5 explains, taking the time to establish this framework may seem overwhelming at first, but doing so in a thoughtful way will truly result in simplifying the complexity of managing security and will distribute and incorporate security responsibilities throughout the enterprise.
Chapter 5: Layered Security, written by Rebecca Herold, is available at: http://nexus.realtimepublishers.com/links/newsletter/dgsip.asp
